The poem I, Too, Sing America or I, Too was short but meaningful literature that directly impacted a specific social issue. Langston Hughes wrote it from his collection of poems which was titled The Weary Blues (1926). The author, Hughes, was a pioneering figure in writing various literature that concerns the life of Black Americans during the year the 1920s to 1960s. This paper will present how the settings of this poem influenced the flow and interpretation of it from its readers.
Historical Setting
It was set during the mid-20th century were World War I took place. In the year between 1910 to 1930, the birth of the Harlem Renaissance emerged due to a large number of Afro-Americans migrating from South to North cities after WWI. Though it served as an era where African-American people could create their own culture, disasters still took place within. In 1930, the Jim Crow system deemed their arms and limbs disabled. It was the time where their rights to vote were removed from them. Segregation and exclusion were also presented during this time, wherein even in public places, the separation of places for Black and White Americans was different (Zakheim, n.d.). This history provided the macro setting of the poem wherein when the lines from the poem went, “I am the darker brother./ They send me to eat in the kitchen (Hughes, 2020)”, it creates the segregation of people just because of their color. The reality setting present during that time influenced Hughes to recreate in his way the portrayal of straight discrimination. The lines, “I, too, am America (Hughes, 2020)”, which present that the character is an American, are also influenced by the historical setting. The line followed the idea of revoking their right, which was happening during the Jim Crow system.
