Introduction
The book Remaking Black Power: How Black Women Transformed, written by Ashely D. Farmer, brings out the power and influence of African American women both politically and culturally during the black power era. She tackles black women regarding their history, intellectual, and political activism topics. According to Farmer, we can easily identify her intention and motive that develop a thesis statement. For instance, The African American female activists fought, developed, and identified new ideas about black women that led to a better understanding of black power and social justice. The power of black womanhood created new tropes such as "Revolutionary Black Woman," "Militant Black Domestic and "Third World Woman." However, these groups led to the emergence of debate over the relevance of women and gender in regard to black women. Critical Analysis of the Chapters
In this book, the author raises an argument through questions on how a reader can understand the contribution of African American women in the Black Power Movement. As she introduces the history of influential black women figures, she helps resolve the tension of the Black Power Movement being presented as patriarchal. Besides, she identifies the black women activists who went against sexism in these movements. In chapter 1, we find out the various ways back women challenged the simplified image of the submissive domestic workers. It is important to note that, since time immemorial, society has been full of patriarchal leadership, dominated by men. Women were viewed as weak and only restricted to domestic chores and handling children at home. However, the radical back women established and identified the "Militant Black Domestic" movement to reimagine the working-class black women as the foundation of politics. Their fights stimulated self-determination and women's equality. Black women used vast and untapped artwork of various women, manifestos, political essays, and writings, which laid a foundation for gender equality and expression of black power. This, however, eliminated the assumption of women being submissive and domestic workers.
Between the 1940s and 1960s, the black women radicals focused on raising the political identity of the black submissive domestic worker. The women activists intersected class, race, and gender oppression that improved the image of black working-class women with self-determination. I can argue that these black women's efforts helped them gain power over society. Their ideas were intersected and united, forming a movement called Militant Negro Domestic.
