Lundrigan, C., Manuel, K., and Yan, M. (2015). “Pretty rad”: explorations in user satisfaction with a discovery layer at Ryerson University. College & Research Libraries 76(1): 43-62.

Briefly summarize the articles, noting the following:
What objectives or questions do each address? How have the authors chosen to define “user satisfaction” for their studies? In other words, by what measure do they know that a user is satisfied? What is their source of data – what do they observe in order to answer the question? What is the specific population the authors wish to study? What does their sample consist of? How did they select it?
Comparatively analyze the articles, addressing these questions:
How clearly did the authors explain their decisions and procedures around research questions, central concepts, operational definitions, populations, and sampling? How do they justify them? Are these justifications convincing?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of their decisions? Do you think the decisions are appropriate to the research objectives or question(s)? Why or why not?
If you were developing your own user satisfaction study, how would these articles inform your design? Which of their decisions around research questions, concepts, operational definitions, population, and sampling would you want to repeat, and what would you want to do differently?

What objectives or questions do each address?
Lundrigan, Manuel and Yan sought to evaluate user satisfaction of a particular web discovery system known as Summon at Ryerson University. On the other hand, Hossain had several research questions to guide his research. He also outlined two objectives of the study. The research questions were; Which service items fall short of users’ expectations? What are the causes of user dissatisfaction? What are the possible measures that may contribute to user satisfaction? The two main objectives he sought were; To identify the causes of user dissatisfaction of services delivered by academic libraries; and to recommend the measures that may lead to user satisfaction.
How have the authors chosen to define “user satisfaction” for their studies?
Lundrigan, Manuel and Yan defined user satisfaction as ‘a measure of the value of their investment.’ Hossain defined user satisfaction as the degree to which library meets its users needs and expectations. Ludrigan, Manuela and Yan pegged their definition of user satisfaction on the value drawn by users from a service.
In other words, by what measure do they know that a user is satisfied?
According to Lundrigan, Manuel and Yan, if a service had little or no value to the user, that service had little of no satisfactory value to the user. On the other hand, Hossain defined user satisfaction in relation to needs and expectations of the user. Therefore, if a service meets users’ needs and or expectations, it is satisfactory ad vice versa.

In both cases, the researches conducted primary research. There was difference in scope and number of respondents but they both applied similar methodologies. They used questionnaires as the main information collection tool..
What is the specific population the authors wish to study?
Lundrigan, Manuel and Yan administered the questionnaires to participant ‘all Ryerson Library users: faculty, staff, students and other community members.’ Their research was primarily conducted in Ryerson University and it was open to all users. hey employed an incentive to encourage higher response rate of a $50 gift card. In the second phase of the research, they increased the incentive to iPads and they witnessed a higher response rate compared to the first instance. Hossain administered his questionnaires to different institutions both private and public in Bangladesh. A total of 900 questionnaires were distributed to the students in the libraries of these universities.
What does their sample consist of?
Lundrigan, Manuel and Yan sample consisted of all library users in Ryerson university library. The users included staff, faculty members and all students. On the other hand, the sample used by Hossain was from ten universities both public and private. The questionnaires administered were 900 to all the universities.
