Executive Summary
This report applies Porter’s Five Forces model to Kmart, one of the oldest and leading discount department stores in Australia and New Zealand. The report finds that there exist many competitors in the market, which limits Kmart’s ability to maintain consistent profits. Due to strong competitive rivalry and high buyers’ bargaining power, the control of firms over prices of products is limited. Therefore, the report presents two recommendations that can help Kmart maintain profitability in the future. First, the company should consider merging with one of its competitors, Target because they share a parent company. This can strengthen its competitive position in the market. Second, Kmart should implement a differentiation strategy to set its operations apart from competitors.
1 Introduction
1 Company Background
Established in 1969, Kmart is one of Australia’s most profitable discount department stores (Kmart, n.d.). According to its website, the company has over 200 stores distributed across Australia and New Zealand. The company’s national office is located in Mulgrave, Australia, which is home to 800 of its team members (Kmart, n.d.). The company employs about 30,000 people who work in its stores. The company deals with a variety of products including apparel, furniture, stationery, consumer electronics, shoes among many others. Another key information about the company is its sustainability program. As described in its website, through its sustainability program, “Better together,” the company listens to its important stakeholders that include partners, employees, and customers (Kmart, n.d.). While the company seeks profitability, it also tries to address the needs of the community.

Therefore, this paper uses the tool to analyse the business environment of Kmart and thereafter offer recommendations for improvement.
2 Porter’s Five Forces Theory
This framework was first described in an article in the Harvard Business Review in 1979, and as noted by O'Hara, Nophale, O'Hara, Marra, and Spiegel (2017), it was later revised in 20...
