Japanese American art and literature
Most authors who identify themselves as being Asian Americans have sought themes and issues that are fundamental to their experience. These include their historical past and its legacy, experiencing diverse and various cultures, impacts of discrimination, racism as well as exclusion, and the attainment of dreams along with dreams that are deferred in a nation of immigrants. In particular, Japanese American literature authors, through their works, depicting the process of developing and defining their identity to be noticed and accepted in a foreign culture.
Japanese American art and literature are not set by a single aesthetic or approach. The mere diversity of artists’ creativity illustrates it’s defiance against any categorization. In their literary works, some artists portray their works with their personal experiences and reflection as a basis, while others utilize historical events and cultural phenomena. Additionally, other artists show their imaginativeness by experimenting with other forms of expression as well as through other types of media. Several Japanese authors have illustrated the central themes of their experiences in their literary works. This paper aims to illustrate the works of Ruth Ozeki and Julie Otsuka in influencing Japanese American art and literature (Matibag).
My Year of Meat
Written by Ruth Ozeki, My Year of Meat is a very interesting novel notable for its plot. The story was focused on strengthening the American cultural dominance fighting their declining economy versus the rise of Asian Culture and its economy through the use of Meat as a Metaphor. It portrayed not only a much closer look into the reality of controversial routines of a beef industry but also tackled two very different women, namely Jane and Akiko, who made a lot of self-discoveries along the way which helped them decide for their betterment and growth. These women are very intriguing as this story has a lot of twists, from their fertility issues, their roles as a woman, etc.
In this novel, the readers would see how the Americans could adapt in certain situations with a positive mind while still producing good outcomes no matter what your gender is or what race do you belong to. Globally, as they practice this, they can influence a lot of other countries to know and include the differences between other culture, race, sex, and class. Change is inevitable as they say, and one must learn how to adapt. My Year of Meat is actually centered on Jane, a documentary filmmaker in a television show that focuses on influencing the Japanese audience about the American culture and values. It showed how Japan shifted as a country due to the influence of Americans in terms of capitalism, consumerism, and just overall American Culture even though it’s already losing its own identity just to blend into the society. As one will interpret this, several questions might arise as this book offers a lot of lessons and values. It can stir up realizations in one’s mind about the things that were taken for granted and the simple things that matter (Cheng).
