This week’s reading prompts us to rethink the importance of civil rights movements in the North as much as in the South. The civil rights movement portrays images of dedicated, disciplined, and committed individuals who were seeking to shape their destinies. The movements marked an era that was committed to activism towards equal treatment of all African Americans as well as equal rights in the U.S. The movements were also sparked by various important events which mainly involved the discrimination of African Americans in all regions across the U.S. During this period, discrimination was a major issue since it limited black people from enjoying similar privileges as white Americans. Black communities and other minority groups were greatly disadvantaged by the limited resources in terms of food, education, residency, and employment, among others. Although Blacks in the various states across America were equally disadvantaged in terms of such resources, which also encouraged individuals to participate in civil rights movements, the race relations in the North and South differed. As stated by Theoharis and Wooward (2003), major civil rights struggles and movements have been linked to the South, since the end of World War 2. As a result, history regards the blacks in the south as having played the most important role in the civil rights movements. As a result, Theoharis and Woodward (2003) state that the civil rights movements are believed to have exclusively emerged from the South.

Nonetheless, the reading provides further insight on the important role that blacks in the North played in the fight for equal rights. Similar to the Southerners, the blacks in the North fought for similar opportunities and challenged the same racialized political economy; however, less recognition was given to the struggles and demonstrations by the Northerners.
