Wage theft is a new phenomenon that has resulted in increasing wage inequality. In such a context, most of the workers experience wage stagnation while those are the top are the only ones who gain from growth and new developments. Wage theft arises in cases where employers fail to pay their employees the full salaries that they are entitled to receive based on their labor (McNicholas, Chaikof, and Mokhiber, 2017). For example, an employer might refuse to pay the employee for overtime or even asking the employees to work for an extra shift without payment.
Wage theft involves different forms of violations such as meal break, off-the-clock, overtime violations, minimum wage, and illegal deductions. Based on the data, low wage workers are the most affected in the United States, and they lost $50 billion due to wage theft (McNicholas, Chaikof, and Mokhiber, 2017).
