Summary
The chapter by Massey, Durand, and Malone (2002) reveals that migration is a complex issue that is often misunderstood by public officials and citizens. Due to the differences in standards of living and incomes between the US and Mexico, a large number of Mexicans migrate north for better prospects. The costs of migrating to the US, such as adapting to the new culture, finding work, and getting housing might be high, but the benefits offset it. The US has often been keen to introduce policies to reduce movement from Mexico to the US. This includes policies like making it illegal to hire an undocumented worker, and even limiting immigrants who are documented and undocumented, from accessing public services. Despite the presence of these policies, the number of illegal immigrants has not declined, and it has not reduced the probability of unauthorized employment.
