American Gladiator
The name resonates with the Roman Empire, and the triumphs that the same had. More importantly, this was an empire that ruled with force and was associated with great military might. As such, every time most of the people come across the word gladiator, the elements of military prowess in mediaeval times come to mind (Gladiator, Special Anniversary Edition, 2005). Both The Fall of The Roman Empire and the remake, Gladiator give the same sense of the mediaeval appeal. This is despite the fact that they were made in different times. The reason being that, they are based on the history of the powerful general called Maximus, the aging emperor, Marcus Aurelius and his son Commodus. The story is based on the Roman history, with some deviations from the actual developments.
This is a story that mimics the fight for freedom and can be used as an allegory for the American quest to be free from the British rule. In the story line, the general is the most favorite to the emperor and as such, when the latter is about to die they place him as the heir. However, the son does not agree with that decision leading to the emperor’s death and that of the general’s family. The gladiator in this story can represent America, while the son of the emperor can represent Great Britain.
