Overview
Over the past couple weeks, you have read about and discussed three social issues: language and power; freedom and security; and health and wealth. For this assignment, you will summarize and respond to the readings related to one of the social issues covered in weeks 2-4.
With your assignment submission, you will include responses to four reflection questions. They are not part of your summary-response and are to be answered separately in the "comments" box of the assignment folder.
Content
Select one of the social issues covered in 2-4. The possible issues are: language and power, freedom and security, and health and wealth. Consider which issue interests you the most or about which you have a clear, strong perspective; ideally you will continue to work with this issue throughout the remainder of the course assignments.
Now choose two of the readings selections related to that social issue. For each of those two readings,
write a 1-2 paragraph summary of the reading selection.
write a 1-2 paragraph response to the reading selection.
Organization
First present the 1-2 paragraph summary and the 1-2 paragraph response for your first reading selection. Then, present the 1-2 paragraph summary and the 1-2 paragraph response for your second reading selection.
Be sure that your paragraphs follow the guidelines for paragraph structure.

Language Choices
As a writer, you are free to decide how you use language, keeping the following in mind:
style: your language choices should result in a consistent writing style that is purposeful and aligned with your goals
readability: your language choices should ensure that your ideas are clear and easy to follow
When composing your paper, think about the conventions for academic writing, including:
punctuation: this includes things such as recommended use of commas, colons, and apostrophes.
word-level accuracy: this includes things such as capitalization, spelling, word-tense, and usage.
sentence-level accuracy: this includes things such as sentence boundaries, subject-verb agreement, and pronoun-antecedent agreement.
Take time to review your language choices after you’ve written your essay. Think about your goals for the style of this essay and your own writing habits (like using “text-speak,” omitting capitalization, or writing sentence fragments). Revise as necessary to accomplish your style and readability goals.
Reading your paper aloud is helpful technique when reviewing your language choices for style and readability.
Sources and Documentation
You are required to use two sources for this assignment. Your sources should be selected from the assigned course readings on your selected issue (language and power; freedom and security; health and wealth).
Since your sources are from assigned course readings, you do not need to include formal citations. However, you should demonstrate basic attribution. This means you should reference the article titles and authors in your summary-response. For example:
In the reading selection, “Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work,” Jean Anyon discusses how American schools are set up to fully educate students from upper-class backgrounds and to give a limited education to students from lower-class backgrounds.
Format and Length
You should submit your summary-response for both readings in a single document/file.
Your paper should include a header consisting of your name and the assignment name and a title that reflects your specific essay focus. (See example below.)
Your paper should be typed, double-spaced and in 11 or 12-point font.
Your summary and response for each of the reading selections should be a minimum of two paragraphs (about 400-500 words) in length. This means that your total document will be 4-8 paragraphs (about 800-1000 words) in length.

Summary
In the reading selection, ‘‘Financial Health is Public Health,’’ Jason Purnell discusses the relationship between financial health and physical and mental health. Purnell particularly believes that money is a measure of health. People who lack enough money cannot afford quality health and are likely to experience severe stress, which affects their mental condition. A 2015 Survey by the American Psychological Association cited in this reading shows that money is the primary cause of worries ahead of work, family, and health problems. In addition, lack of financial resources affects an individual’s ability to lead a healthy lifestyle. According to Purnell, adults with lower incomes experience high levels of financial stress, which plunges them into negative coping mechanisms like drinking alcohol, smoking, eating, and watching television excessively. These habits increase the person’s risk of chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease.
Purnell also asserted that not only adults suffer the effects of stress due to lack of money. Childhood exposure to poverty and stress has an immediate and long-term impact on development, health, and behavior. Children who experience severe stress are at high risk for negative behavioral and health outcomes as adults. They are also likely to cope using risky behaviors like substance use, overacting, unsafe sexual practices, and problem gambling in adolescence and adulthood. Simply put, Purnell argues that socioeconomic factors play a significant role in a person's health. Therefore, to solve the health problem in a country, the government should establish measures and policies to increase healthcare access and affordability.
Response
I totally agree with Purnell’s idea that money is a measure of health. It increases an individual’s chance of receiving quality healthcare. Those with money can access better healthcare compared to the poor. Health improves with higher income, and the poor have worse health than the rich. It is also true that individuals with low income are highly likely to experience stress, which affects their mental health. In this case, Purnell is right when he says that limited financial resources affect a person’s psychological and physical health. The stressful condition caused by lack of money can push individuals to smoke, drinking alcohol, and watching television excessively as a way of coping.
Although I agree with Purnell on these three coping mechanisms, I can't entirely agree with him about eating to cope with financial distress. Many studies have linked lack of appetite with stress. People who experience stressful conditions can quickly lose appetite. They can go hungry not because they do not have something to eat but because they are not in the mood to do so. Therefore, I find it hard to believe that eating is a coping mechanism when one encounters financial distress. Apart from this objection, everything that Purnell discusses in the reading is accurate.
