Essay Instructions:

This is the second installment of your four-part project. Again, you will produce a reflective essay that contains five components. Please ensure you employ proper headings for each of the five components and utilize proper APA citations and references throughout. This activity aligns with module outcome 4.
Revisit your chosen challenge or hardship—personal, academic, or financial—from week 2, and with continued development of your strategy, address the following components in your essay.
From chapters 4 & 5, employ the specific lessons outlined in your reading:
Explain how a Stage 2* approach in Cognitive Development applies here and identify its limitations.
(*Note: Stage 2, Relativism: When the authorities don’t have the right answers, everyone has a right to his or her own opinion; there are no right or wrong answers.)
Identify at least 3 of your cognitive and social errors and how they might interfere with an effective strategy for tackling your challenge.
Discuss how a distorted sense of control has had an impact on your ability to achieve your life goals. Come up with at least two critical-thinking strategies you could use to correct for this cognitive error.
Identify three of the more common fallacies you are most likely to commit and how they interfere with the successful strategy to your hardship/challenge.
Identify three of the most effective strategies for avoiding these fallacies and how they will help with your successful implementation of your strategy.

The previous task identified and highlighted the benefits of critical thinking. It is evident that creative thinking not only enhances in-depth thoughts but also helps to support rational and informed decision making. Through critical thinking, persons in society succeed in getting through challenges using various coping strategies including cognitive development. I highlighted in the last assignment the academic challenges characterized by poor grades that I was facing since I joined the university. My grades have been nothing short of appalling and which is quite surprising considering I pride myself as being a bright student. Nonetheless, I have embarked on tackling my academic challenges using the different theories and stages of cognitive development as devised by Swiss Philosopher Jean Piaget. To begin with, I employed the formal operational stage to apply and use deductive reasoning in efforts of concluding on abstract ideas and issues. The initiative was fruitful as it assisted me to identify different solutions to my academic issues. However, the formal operational stage also has its limitations including the fact that it assumes that young individuals naturally have increased sense of logic and are experienced in the application of deductive reasoning. It also deems that young people of such tender ages are in position to tackle their hardships independently and which cannot be any further from the truth. As such, I purpose to employ a second stage of cognitive development known as autonomous morality or moral relativism in efforts to conclusively address the academic hardships I am facing.
Moral Relativism and its Limitations
Moral relativism otherwise known as autonomous morality is one of the universal stages fronted by Piaget to assist in the moral development of young people. It denotes that morality is associated and linked to one’s rules. These sentiments are echoed by Feldman (2004) who shares that “moral relativism entails that children recognize there is no absolute right or wrong and that morality depends on intentions not consequences”. From Piaget’s perspective, children over the age of 9 years usually undergo fundamental reorganization of their comprehension of moral issues. During that time, they have outgrown the egos that characterized their childhoods. They are also wiser and are in position to see and understand moral rules from the perspectives of others. In this regard, Piaget believed that by decentering and taking into account the intentions and circumstances of others, children in the second stage are more inclined to make not only independent but also moral judgments (Feldman, 2004). With the second stage of moral relativism, children also comprehend that rules are made by ordinary people and can be changed whenever need arises. I firmly believe that the second stage of cognitive development in moral relativism applies and will assist in addressing the academic challenges I am facing.
