Unethical government
When political leaders are voted by citizens into various political seats, the citizens have high hopes for better leadership in the future. After the general election results are announced and the new politicians resume their respective offices, people are eager to see the great changes they were promised by their leaders during campaigns. This is not what really happens to most nations, and the subjects are caught by surprise nothing is done or the countries’ situation worsens. This discussion will focus on the unethical government by most nations; its authoritative leadership and other cruel rulings of the government. The government of Cuba is a good example during the Fidel Castro regime clearly brought out by Reinaldo Arenas in his novel “goodbye mother”.
In the short story goodbye mother, Arenas use various symbolic representation of the government, its subjects and the poor decisions being made by the government. Arenas is raised in a poor life status with his four sisters and their beloved mother. Before their mother’s death, they used to live a happy life despite their poor life status. Their mother represents the government before the revolution. During the older days, they used to live happily together during the ruling by Bastista. The government was peaceful and people were happy in their communal life. People used to do their farming activities anywhere in Cuba without any restrictions. They used to contribute to the government through their small community leaders around their villages (Dieterle & Wagner, 2019). This peaceful life ended when the Cuba revolution started in 1953, led by Fidel Castro.
When Castro organized the attack of the Moncada army barracks and failed, he was sent to prison. He was released in 1955 and went back to the guerrilla wars against the government (Abdullah &Wood, 2017). The guerrilla army gained strength after Castro coming back from prison. The people were ready to support them and they provided them with food, war tools, and recruits. They did with the promise that they will improve their lives greatly. In 1957 Bastista tried to stop them by the massive attack but he was not successful. Castro attacked back, he won and took the government in January 1959. This was the death of the old regime, the end of Bastista error, the death of Arenas’ mother, and the beginning of dictatorship government.
When their mother dies, Arenas sisters all cry for days surrounding her. Despite making loud cries for days on the rotting body, nothing positive comes out. The dead and rotting corpse represents the new government. The new government was a better hope for the people but it’s a surprise to everyone for becoming worse than the previous government. Castro’s government was rotting and smelling. Dictatorship, injustice, corruption, and poverty was the smell coming from the rotting government. People lived in fear without their previous freedom. Arenas' work criticizes the government, something that does not make Castro happy at all (McDermott, 2016). In his work, Arenas tries to stop his sisters from crying around the dead body as nothing good can come up. These represent what he was trying to tell the people about the government...
