Fences Final Writing Assignment & Project Literature Essay

Essay Instructions:

Fences and “The Sins of the Father”
Wilson’s decision to make the conflict between father and son the central
pivot of the play shows us how important he believes the bonds between
children and their parents are. Cory doesn’t understand this dynamic – he
continually insists that he doesn’t want to be like Troy. Yet, Rose sees his
father in him. And by the end of the play, Cory is more like Troy than even
he notices. For example, Cory’s dreams of sports and college are thrown
aside and his singing about the dog Blue to Raynell on the porch is eerily
reminiscent to what Troy did for Cory as a little boy. The “sins of the father”
are passed down – notice Cory’s stubbornness about attending the funeral.
He sounds just like his father.
The truth is no matter how hard we try to avoid becoming our parents, we
always end up a reflection of who they are. So to the point: in focusing on
our theme of Identity, in what ways are you like your parents? What traits
have you inherited from them? What points of view? What political opinions?
What philosophy of life?
ASSESSMENT WRITING PART 1: Please write a two-three page response
based on the question above. In what ways are you a reflection of your
parents? Include references to Fences if appropriate; otherwise, feel free to
include experiential details from your own life to enhance your claims.
ASSESSMENT PROJECT PART 2: If your life were to be made into a play,
what would it be called? For the second part of this assessment, please
design a book jacket based on the play of your life. On the front cover,
include the title – put yourself as the playwright – and include some design
elements that can be analyzed. What symbols – much like the fence on our
copy of the play – would you use to describe your life? For the back cover,
instead of a summary of the story, write a two-paragraph response
explaining your (1) title and your (2) symbol choices.

Personal Reflection

The world we live in is full of problems, tensions, and controversies, and the two people who protect us from all uncertain situations are the father and the mother. They are always there to listen to us, to help us, to guide us, and to pave our ways toward success. It is safe to mention that every child is the reflection of his or her parents in one way or the other. Some of the children might have facial features similar to either their mom or dad, while the others will inherit intelligence from the elders. In my case, I have inherited many characteristics from both my mother and dad. I was raised by a single mother because my father, according to my mom, passed away when I was only one year old. It was not easy for her to manage the life alone. She was forced to work to earn a living and to support my education. I grew up seeing my mother helping the poor and donating whatever was possible for her. In the meantime, she used to work overnight to fulfill my basic requirements, such as clothing, foods, games and other things.
Things kept going this way until I completed my graduation and decided to do a part-time job to support my postgraduate studies. I never wanted to put any financial burden on the mom as she has been through tough times for nearly twenty years. In my childhood, I used to observe her keenly and inherited her habit of helping others. While at the college, I help the elderly and the young ladies by doing their day-to-day works. It does not mean I skip the lectures; in fact, my mother has taught me how to be a multi-tasker. Managing the households, and doing the job has been a must part of her life, and in the college, I also do the things that make others feel happy and satisfied. For example, whenever I see a poor around, asking for money, or a homeless person needing the food, I get some bucks out of my pocket and hand them over to those individuals in no time. My mother says that she loves seeing me help the poor and the needy, as according to her, it is one of the best and most valuable assets of one’s life.
When it comes to talking about how I am a reflection of my father, who passed away years ago and left my mother a...
