Introduction
According to Nicholas Carr, in his article ‘The Atlantic Monthly’ he notes that technology is making us stupid. Carr says the internet has enabled us to access a lot of information at a high rate, but it encourages us not to pay attention to it. Additionally, he says that internet may be harming us since it shortens our attention and stops our ability to read books and articles. Dell’ Antonia also urges parents to limit the technology time for their kids. According to Antonia, technology has significantly reduced the creativity of the children since they are always at the receiving end and not on the creating end which focuses on enforcing creativity among the technology users (Dotson, 2012). The views of the two authors are correct since excessive and overreliance on technology and internet have greatly interfered with individual’s mental ability to read, think and remember.
The Internet has greatly contributed to people becoming more stupid. The internet has changed the manner in which people think. Excessive use of the internet has negatively affected the people’s ability to read and remember. Nicholas Carr stated that internet had affected the ability of people to read (Naughton, 2010). He noted that his friends were having problems in overcoming internet influenced attention deficit disorder. He adds that one of his friends was affected by the internet to the extent that he would not manage reading three to four paragraphs since the level of absorbing was too low. Additionally, the internet has contributed to the loss of concentration and contemplation.
Internet and technology have also contributed lack of attentiveness among student in during lessons. It is a notable trend that many young people students included have become addicted to the use of internet especially the social media platforms. Due to this addiction, students cannot fully pay attention to their lecturers and professors; they always find themselves using their social media when the lectures are in progress. This is a form of distraction which is caused by both technology and internet. Such distractions significantly affect the rate of concentration among the students and also affects their performance in class (Paul, 2012).
According to Dell’ Antonia, internet and technology have also negatively affected the kids. Notably, before the internet, computers were mostly used for learning. People would learn to create computer pictures the hard way; they would make errors and crash the work at times. Computers made people think and create. However, kids nowadays don’t use computers for learning they use it for entertaining which makes the kids be at the receiving end instead of prioritizing to be on the creating end. Kids need to be controlled on how to use the internet to minimize the negative implications which may be caused by excessive use of internet and improper use of the computers.
