In “To Kill A Mockingbird”, we learn how Scout became frustrated on her first day of school. Later, when she is speaking with Atticus, she tells him that she will not be returning to school if it is okay with him. Interestingly enough, instead of yelling at her, Atticus gives her a very sound advice. He says, ”You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view----until you climb into his skin and walk around in it”. (Chapter 3) Why do you think that Atticus gave Scout this advice, given her young age? How does this advice apply to her experience at school, or to how she is to accept the challenges life will present to her in the future? Do you believe that Scout had the knowledge to understand the ramifications of this advice? In your essay, explain and elaborate the above questions from your point of view. Show how sound advice like the one Atticus gave his daughter might be advice that could be applied to a person's life's real events. In addition, explain the reason(s) why Atticus might have given his young daughter this type of advice. In your opinion, should he have scolded her instead? Literature: To Kill A Mockingbird
The novel titled "To kill a mockingbird" as written by Harper Lee highlights on some of the issues that affected the narrators family that composed of the narrator herself Scout Finch. Her elder brother Jem and her father Atticus who is middle aged lawyer. In the novel it`s clear to see that the narrators father Mr. Atticus who is a lawyer doesn`t compel either his children of the community into reasoning as the majority of the community reasons, (Lee, 1988).
An advice is someone`s opinion offered as a guide to action. A parent can advice his or her child on as a warning, for guidance or a suggestion. In many cases parents advice their children to enable them take some action, which they believe, is right. A practical advice may make one change his or her mind especially if they realize that they are on the wrong. Parents many times may advice their children after careful deliberation upon the prevailing problem. Advice from parents, if taken seriously normally causes children to change their conduct.
In the book "To Kill a Mockingbird", Atticus gives scout the advice ‘you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view----until you climb into his skin and walk around in it". He gives her daughter this advice to help her develop the quality of tolerance. He has taught his daughter how to read and write. He has even taught her how to write a script. At school, her teacher punishes her and explains that her father does not know how to teach. This leaves Scout confused frustrated.
She is contemplating not returning to school if her father would let her. This prompts the father to give her the advice. The father intended that the advice would cause her daughter to think in his teacher`s point of view. He intended that Scout would understand that the teacher did not mean harm but was trying to assist her improve on her script writing skills. Most probably, the teacher realized that her scripts were not up to the required standard. The problem came in because Scout believed that her scripts were perfect. She was unable to understand this unless she changed her point of view. That`s why her father gave her the advice.
Depending on her age, I believe she could not understand the ramification of this advice. This is because she is too young to change her ...
