Introduction
On 28th December, 2014, at least two hundred protesters marched in Brooklyn, New York. The protesters were demanding justice for Akai Gurley, an African American who was shot to death by a New York Police Department (NYPD) officer. According to Nessen (2014), Mr. Liang, a rookie police officer shot Mr. Gurley, aged 28, in a darkened stairway in an apartment East of New York in Brooklyn.
The incident has served to influence public opinion regarding the death of African Americans at the hands of police, which has mostly been centered on the poignant mater of police brutality. Consequently, some quarters such as the organizers of the march in Brooklyn feel that the police are being used as an instrument to advance racism, prejudice, and injustice towards African Americans.
