1 What does Facebook need to decide?
Facebook needs to decide how to address concerns about Cambridge Analytica's use of personal information taken from Facebook without Facebook’s authorization. The Facebook executives need to show that they have made efforts to recover and secure their information and give assurances to alert them in case of a data breach. Social media platforms should be honest and authentic when communicating with all stakeholders, respecting their clients, employees, and the public’s privacy, and keep their information confidential (Social Media Club, 2018). Cambridge Analytica harvested data and personal information from Facebook profiles to target US voters and the Brexit campaign where there was a focus on personalized political advertisements (Cadwalladr, 2018).
2 What are the one or more moral problems?
One of the issues was data collection from users who did not consent where Facebook had captured data that Cambridge Analytica used, which raised concerns about privacy protection. There was no clarity on what data was controlled and how Cambridge Analytica used the data. Facebook knew that users’ data was being tracked and monitored, and they failed to protect user privacy and understand how the harvested data was used. Failure to protect users’ confidentiality meant that 3rd parties used this data without authorization, and as such, Facebook did not act in the best interests of Facebook users.
