§ Critical summary and synthesis of 3 cited academic sources [5%]
Using UB Libraries resources, or other resources at your disposal, find three academic sources published in a peer-reviewed journal, encyclopedia, edited volume, or academic book. The topic should be directly related to your project topic, be it in its primary object of analysis, methodology, linguistic and/or social theoretical orientation, population or speech community under analysis, shared historical context, etc.
After reading the sources, you will write a review of the literature, that is, a synthesis approximately 250-500 words of the primary intellectual or methodological contributions of those sources to your topic and/or analysis. You won’t be able to touch on every, or event most of the details of those publications. Instead of trying to explain it all, you should extract the most relevant information for your purposes and explain cohesively how and why it is relevant. This information might consist of:
A motivating impetus for your research questions: Is there an unsolved mystery about a feature of language, a development in a language, a particular linguistic behavior, etc.? Are there conflicting results from different studies? Different interpretations of some linguistic phenomenon? A previously unnoticed correlation between a social phenomenon and a linguistic structure/change/choice/behavior etc.?
A methodological procedure or innovation that would be useful for your project.
Historical background or an ethnographic study on the population or speech community you’re considering.
A linguistic analysis of a particular feature of a language or of several languages.
A theoretical framework analyzing certain types of data or observations.
