Endogamy vs. Exogamy
Marriage and the resulting family setup are some of the most familiar social ties that exist globally. Different aspects may form research topics under the context of marriage, including the number of wives a man has. Besides, it may take the form of the underlying social group within or outside which one chooses their spouse. Endogamy relates to the state of an individual marrying a person from their social and cultural class or group. In contrast, exogamy involves a marriage between people from varying social groups, as typical of persons who intend to reduce specific risks (Satlow, 2018). Altogether, the two distinct marriages exhibit inherent challenges, which are worth noting, especially for professional handling cases of partners involved.
Challenges
One of the most inherent challenges in endogamy marriages is the risk of being compelled to live with abnormal partners, knowingly or unknowingly, merely because they have limited choices. According to Dousset (2018), marrying from communities or cultures an individual is not related to is one of the most prominent ways of avoiding specific behavioral and genetic abnormalities from being passed to the next generation. However, with endogamy, there is stricter and narrower scope for a person to marry, leaving them with no choice regardless of their health or psychological wellbeing. As such, giving rise to an unhealthy child may result in people shifting blames to avoid guilt. Additionally, as endogamic couples live together as married partners, they are bound to develop hatred toward other people from different social classes. For example, Indians hardly marry from out of their social ties because of outsiders' intrinsic dislike, which erodes national unity in the long run.
