The establishment of health-based information structures has developed over the past few decades. Their implementation has developed as a result of the wave of technology that is dominating many professional fields such as medicine. The Electronic Patient Record (EPR) is the core of the infrastructure set for healthcare information systems (Halford, 2008). From this basis, various other forms have come into place. Some of these forms have been improvements while others have been unsuccessful in their operation. The major initiative for the development of EPR was based on research methods implemented in the medical informatics environment (Orlikowski, 2007). The research then became the foundation of the electronic patient records utilized in various hospitals today. The development of the information system was formed through the combination of efforts between the medical practitioners and researchers with technical insight. The curious nature of both parties involved in the creation of the information systems led to the creation of a firm foundation for their use. However, the infrastructure used in healthcare systems has developed over the years due to various issues. The state of healthcare information systems infrastructure has been affected by different areas. Some of the major areas that affect it include connectivity, data management and security. This paper focuses on the security of healthcare information systems.
Development of the Systems
The use of EHRs requires the collaboration between different parties in order to be successful. Different independent services combine to provide these services while respecting privacy, security and confidentiality constraints. The medical profession holds confidentiality of patient matters with high regard since their release to other parties may cause distrust of the public systems (Tang, 2009). This has been evident through the resistance of healthcare workers to the introduction of technology to the healthcare sector. Doctors and nurses are afraid of the designers of the systems may pay little attention to the medical profession’s patterns of work (Orlikowski, 2007). Therefore effective team collaboration needs to exist for the healthcare systems to be successful.
Major Factors Involved
When developing the EHRs, it is important to manage the access control of the systems. They should be secure in that not just anybody can access the records. A non-hierarchical system is preferred to team collaboration to run the systems.
