Puffery refers to advertising that praises the product or service to be sold with subjective superlatives, opinions, or exaggerations vaguely without mentioning any specific fact (Punjani, Kumar, & Kadam, 2019). As such, no sane person would take puffery to be true. The use of subjective terms such as best and perfect allows advertisers to attract customers and at the same time remain on the safe side of the law. Examples of puffery are Gillete’s tagline “the best man can get” and Starbucks’ ad “the best coffee for the best YOU” (Fuchs, 2020). The use of the subjective term “best” in these advertisements means that the claims cannot be substantiated but can play a role in attracting customers.
