Paragraph 5: Conclusion. This paragraph is a reversal of the introductory funnel. Here you should basically sum up what you have proven and then move out to a generalization.
Why these elements?
The cynical justification of teaching students about the classic 5-Paragraph Essay is that it is a formula that college students are expected to have already mastered. However, I think that the true justifications are deeper. The formula points you towards essential elements in all good argumentative writing:
1. Argument Every essay should have a clear argument. This is reflected in the thesis statement at the end of the introductory paragraph. If you don't know what your thesis statement is, you don't know what you're trying to say.
2. Evidence. The notion of defending your argument with multiple points is part of the division of the body of the paper into separate paragraphs, which each have their own subject.
3. Logic. The transitions explain how each piece of the evidence you are marshaling connects to the other pieces of evidence and thus to your argument as a whole. If each piece of evidence is a brick in your argument, the transitions are the mortar that holds them in place.
4. Communication with the reader. Transitions articulate the logic of your argument not only to yourself but also to the reader. You should always write with the reader in mind. That is why introductions tend to start with generalizations that draw the reader into the topic. It's also why your introduction needs to include the names and authors of texts you are about to discuss; you should assume the reader is educated (you don't have to explain who the Grimms are) but has not necessarily read the same things you have. That is also why you may need to quickly summarize the plot in order to conceptualize your specific points. Imagine reading your essay as if you hadn't read the specific stories. If your essay isn't clear from that perspective, you need to include more context.
Not all writing follows this model, obviously. More sophisticated essays may start with different hooks. Longer essays may have longer introductions. However, the elements that this formula demands—evidence that builds to a logical argument that is clearly presented to the reader—are the foundation of all good expository writing, and so this formula is a kind of exercise to build those muscles.
