Border and coastal security have been critical concerns in the United States, especially at the political forefront. Over the years, illegal immigrants from Mexico and Canada have crossed the border illegally to the United States. As a strategy to stop illegal border crossing, the United States government has focused on border security, especially the Mexican land border (Lawler, 2021). Uncrewed vehicles, ground sensors, an array of radars, and border patrol agents are some of the strategies that enhance border security. According to the research findings, Congress has set immigration enforcement goals. However, the goals have been unfeasible, leading to an increased number of illegal immigrants.
The author explores on Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that secures territorial waters, terminals, waterways, and sea transportation systems of the United States. According to the findings of research by Lawler (2021), DHS enhances the safety and security of the United States while promoting a humane and orderly immigration system. The department accomplishes the objective by expediting legitimate trade and travel while enforcing immigration laws. According to Zaffar (2019), DHS comprises of U.S Coast Guard, U.S Customs and Border Protection Service, and other federal agencies that minimize the risk of terror attacks and entry of drugs across the national borders. Therefore, DHS plays a critical role in addressing potential threats to the homeland to defend the Americans from threats.
The U.S Customs and Border Protection is one of the federal law enforcement agencies of DHS that secures national borders while protecting the public from terror threats, including deterring the entry of weapons that might cause mass destruction. Besides, CBP detects and prevents illegal entry of aliens into the country (Lawler, 2021). Additionally, the agency expedites legal immigration and the flow of goods in and out of the United States. CBP’s officials patrol Canada, Mexico, and Coastal borders through modern surveillance technology. As a subdivision of DHS, CBP enacts laws and regulations regarding border crossing and smuggling of contraband. The 9/11 terrorist incident resulted in heightened regulations regarding the entry of aliens.
Considerably, U.S customs and border protection agents encounter numerous challenges in executing their duties and responsibilities to secure the national borders. The key focus of the agents is to execute a lawful border search.
