An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge
Digression refers to deviation from the main plot to insert another subject that is not closely related to the main topic. The author uses digression in the second part to explain more about Peyton's past life before he was captured. He deviates from the main plot to paint a picture of Peyton's family, his life before, and the events that led to his arrest. Fahrquhar was a rich farmer from a highly regarded Alabama family. Furthermore, he was an enslaver and a secessionist supporting the South's independence.
How does Each of the Parts End?
The story is divided into three parts. The first part ends with the man subjected to hanging, focusing on slow-moving driftwood being carried away by the water in the stream. He also tried to distract himself by channeling his thoughts toward his wife and children. However, a striking sound of a metallic object draws his attention as he tries to figure out what it means. The man then gazes at the water below him, imagining how he could untie his hands, dive into the stream, and swim away to evade his captors.
The second part ends with Mrs. Fahrquhar serving the soldier a glass of water which he takes and thanks to her. The soldier bowed to Mr. Fahrquhar and left their compound. He passed through the plantation an hour later and headed northwards where he came from.
The final part ends with Peyton dying at the Owl Creek Bridge, where union soldiers subjected him to execution by hanging. Before his death, he imagines running away from his captors and arriving home. He opens the gate and sees his wife, who walks down the veranda to meet him with a smile.
