Much has changed to the mission and scope of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) since its creation in 2002. It was originally created to address the issues related to terrorism; however, has evolved into a larger, monolithic entity addressing a myriad of domestic and international related to homeland security, national preparedness, cybersecurity, pandemics, and the list goes on. Like any good organization, when factors change in the equation to address problems they are facing, the organization must adjust as well to be successful in protecting the United States.

Examine in detail, the Department of Homeland Security Mission website (https://www(dot)dhs(dot)gov/mission) which provides six overarching homeland security missions that make up their strategic plan. Incepted after the September 11th attacks, the Department of Homeland Security brought together twenty-two federal departments to signify America’s resilient response and mission towards securing its homeland against future threats and disasters resulting from natural or artificial causes. However, the department's scope has extended into working to secure the United States Homeland borders, managing immigration processes, ensuring cyber-security, preserving economic prosperity and security, and strengthening alertness and resilient response to attacks. Primarily, countering terrorism remains the intended and most important focus for the institution of the department. Furthermore, terrorism and targeted violence increasingly criss-cross with one another, and there is also some calibration in the tools that can be used against them.
Protecting the United States of America remains the department's core mission, despite the country having a strong and resilient homeland security enterprise. This enterprise brings together other federal security agencies that work to fortify homeland security by preventing the nation from terrorism and targeted violence represented in domestic or external threats. A domestic threat can be detected by the local and federal security agencies and coordinated with the Department of Homeland Security. This appropriate stance ensures that public safety is guaranteed. Threats not only originate from singular groups or individuals but also from communities and what are considered distant regions (Mitchell, 2018).
