Death is an inevitable phenomenon that no mortal being can escape. It can be slow, allowing us to contemplate the life we lived, or a fast process, which snatches us our right to relinquish our past experiences. It can be predictable or unpredictable, making it challenging for us to determine how to live our everyday life as if it were the last. Because of death’s capriciousness, we often take for granted the subtle things about ourselves or our loved ones and notice just at the moment that they or we are about to depart. This situation is best portrayed by Emily Dickinson’s poem entitled “The Last Night that She Lived,” which talks about an ordinary day that led to a loss of a loved one and the different emotions that the various sorrows bring, which ultimately lead to succumbing to grief.
Our life on earth is limited by death, a natural process to put us into oblivion. All of us undergo the process of being created and turned back into dust. This is an absolute one, no matter how little time we spent living. Consequently, we all have unique stories on how we lived and how we will live the world.
Generally, Dickinson (n.d.) wrote the poem as an observer rather than the story’s main character. She used the first-person point-of-view (POV) to talk about her and her companions and the third-person POV to talk about the deceased. Here, she expressed the gradual changes in the emotions that she felt, as if nothing happened until everything sank into her mind.
