The article Tattoos on the Heart describes the association of various people in a certain setting. The author reveals the narrator of the story teaching theology at a prison whereby the inmates request on the discussion of other topics. In English studies, the group discussed a book by O’Conner; a good man is hard to find (Boyle, 2011). The inmates realize the ideal change encountered by the grandmother. This process shows transformation in the character, leading to a difference in the actions of the woman towards other individuals. The prisoners reveal that having sympathy entails feeling sorry for someone because they are going through a difficult situation while empathy involves encouragement tailored from experience in a similar difficulty (Boyle, 2011). However, the inmates could give a clear meaning of compassionate from the transformation of the grandmother in the story.
The theme of compassion and emotional feelings towards the needs of other people is later revealed in the article when the narrator keeps vigil with Betito’s grandmother to pray for a successful operation. The young boy had been accidentally shot in a clash between drug dealers and authorities and the narrator thought that keeping the grandmother company would give the old lady sufficient comfort (Boyle, 2011). Cruelty is also revealed in the setting represented by the article. According to the narrator, some members of the gang kill other people and the kids living in the surrounding kill their fellow children.
