Synthesis Paper on Hamlet by William Shakespeare and The Lais of Marie De France by Marie De France
In Hamlet and Lais of Marie de France, it is evident that love is strong and it prompts those who truly love to risk and sometimes pay the ultimate price for their loved ones. It is a theme that is also replicated by other authors such as in the Bloody chamber by Angela Carter and Six Characters in Search of an Author by Luigi Pirandello. Though in Pirandello’s work the theme is hidden under the actions of the Characters whose drama detailed elements of love and family, the theme on family, love and hatred is evident. The Company of Wolves, the bloody chamber and the Werewolf stories by Angela Carter also feature aspects of love and hatred in a family setting. In the case of Hamlet, Hamlet and many characters in the Lais of Marie De France pay the price for their love. The story of Lanval, Laustic, Yonec, Chevrefoil, Eliduc and Les Deus Amaz in the Lais of Marie de France and The Werewolf, the Company of Wolves and the Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter and Hamlet how the risks people in love take for their loved ones.
A closer examination of Hamlet and Lais of Marie De France show how these themes are revealed. Hamlet is a play by William Shakespeare centered Hamlet who is a Danish kingdom prince. The play starts after the death of the king and the queen (Getrude) is married by the king’s brother (Claudius, Hamlet’s uncle). The late king appears to Hamlet as a ghost and informs him that he was murdered by his brother (the incumbent king Claudius) and orders Hamlet to avenge his death. Hamlet hatches a plan to play mad to kill Claudius. Claudius and Ophelia (Hamlet’s lover and Laertes sister) are convinced that he is mad and plan on how to help him. In the meantime, Hamlet arranges for a play to be performed in front of Claudius depicting how his father was murdered. Hamlet wanted to see Claudius reaction to the play to confirm if he murdered his father. Claudius is troubled by the play and leaves to go and pray for forgiveness where Hamlet hunts him down but spares his life because the believes that if he kills him when praying, he will to heaven and he wanted him to go to hell. Hamlet goes to confront his mother about marrying Claudius and his father’s death where his father reappears in form of a ghost to re-center Hamlet on his purpose. Getrude does not see it and he believes that his son is mad. He also ends up killing Polonius accidentally. Claudius hatches a plan to get Hamlet killed in England and it does not work and he returns to Denmark. He finds Ophelia dead and Laertes blaming him for the death of his father and sister. Claudius convinces Laertes that he must kill Hamlet in a duel. However, during the fight, both fighters are fatally wounded and die. Hamlet also kills Claudius after Laertes confesses to him that it was his idea to get him killed and Getrude also drinks the poison meant for Hamlet. The play ends with all the royal family dead and the Prince of Norway takes over.
