The Diffusion of Innovation Theory is a group theoretical model used in healthcare organizations to enhance nursing patient care practices. Diffusion of Innovation Theory is a behavioral model that delineates the procedures users undergo to adopt or reject new practices, technology, or ideas (Zhang et al., 2015). This report uses community behavioral model concepts including empowerment, critical awareness, community capacity, issue selection, participation, and relevance to explain a scenario of innovation acceptance among the adopting group.
Issue selection relates to the need for the nursing group to identify specific targets as part of attaining their organizational or system vision. For instance, patient care needs to be research-based to ensure positive patient outcomes and facilitate the realization of nursing vision – seek evidence and innovations and apply them within their routine practice. In this case scenario, the nursing groups would need to be empowered to play an active role in research work via educational preparation in research and enhancing support, interest, belief, and confidence in the value of the new ideas or innovation.
