Students have a hard time transitioning from the mainly theoretical class work to the extremely manual setup of employment. The expectations after employment often overwhelm some students who end up getting fired early or spending the better part of their days learning and moving from one training session to another. However, the introduction of placement has helped a lot of students to train for their dream jobs and to also learn the level of professionalism that is required in their field. Recently, I was involved in a similar activity. I was skeptical of the entire exercise at first but I later came to realize that the activity helped me to learn more about myself as well as other necessary skill of life. My placement exercise took place at the Shopmobility Sheffield Company. This organization mainly advices clients on how to either rent or buy four-wheeled scooters and the manual wheelchairs. The tasks involved require people who are skilled and ready to place the interests of others above theirs.
Life’s experiences can teach one values that most people would take for granted. While at Shopmobility Sheffield, I interacted with a lot of clients and learned how to approach them while aiming to offer the best advice to them. A majority of the clients were old and therefore, it was essential to learn how to interact with them and help them choose the best and appropriate wheelchair for their needs. The job might seem straight forward but through it, I learned how to value other people, and to treat everyone with respect regardless of their background or condition.
