Chapter 1
This chapter mainly seeks to describe the generalist practice using the Generalist Intervention Model (GIM). It describes to social workers how they need to factor in all the elements of generalist practice to improve their efficacy. The author acknowledges the existence of other definitions but provides one which is all inclusive and that guides social workers on how they ought to successfully bring about change. He shines a light on a few essential issues while also emphasizing the importance of values and ethics in practice. In almost every field or practice, some aspects seem obvious and normal, but that can negatively influence a process. The author warns that the same is evident among social workers mainly because people ignore the seemingly obvious factors. However, to be effective and to work with a sense of finesse, the author asks that all the factors and issues raised be taken seriously and put into practice.
At any instance, there are different levels of systems and each must be approached differently. However, instead of using the normal methods, the author advocates for the use of GIM. The generalist intervention model seeks to solve problems or tackle issues at multiple levels of intervention. With this model, one is required to engage a seven-step plan when regardless of the size of the target system. Aside from making the process more coordinated, this plan streamlines and makes the process clearer and easier to approach. However, one this is made clear in the entire chapter: it is all about the client. A close study is therefore essential, and social workers must assess the clients’ strengths and limitations while also expressing a sense of understanding towards the diverse factors that shape the lives of the clients.
Finally, social workers must always work within the constraints of the organization. This often entails the formal and informal boundaries that need not be broken regardless of the situation at hand. It is important also to mention that there is a pattern of behavior that is expected. Professionalism is of course not a bargain, and one must be or simply act the part. Lastly, every situation must always be scrutinized, and all aspects envisioned.
