The use of social media is among the most apparent cultural aspects of modern society. In the USA, adolescents aged 13 to 18 years spent an average of 1 hour and 11 minutes daily on social media as of 2018 (Uhls et al., 2017). According to Asano (2017), this amount of time is on the rise with increasing internet penetration, the development of digital skills among the general population, and increased ownership of digital devices, including smartphones and computers.
Among the adolescent population, social media has an array of benefits, including being a source of fun & entertainment, developing better social skills, an avenue for participation in social change, learning about new cultural & societal issues & ideas, and bonding with friends.
