Cyberbullying and the First Amendment
A bully is someone who continually humiliates an understudy. Adverse actions may be social, emotional, or physical. As technology has evolved, cyberbullying has become more prominent in our schools and world. Schools often have training on steps to take if a child is experiencing bullying, but sometimes cyber bullying is more difficult to catch or see than other types of bullying. So, how can one know how to manage a bullying situation? If an understudy report bullying on a classmate's Facebook page, what procedures must you take to comply with state laws, school board policies, staff handbooks, and understudy handbooks? Do you foresee any First Amendment issues with the understudy's Facebook page? Do you have any responses to the First Amendment arguments compatible with the assigned readings? This essay paper will answer all of those questions for this case.
The Step Explanation You Are Required to Take
The Code of Conduct for my division specifies that disciplinary action is to be taken for bullying situations inside and outside the school. Local law enforcement may be notified in the event of an incident. The Code requires teachers of Conduct to report cyberbullying incidents to the school counseling and administration (Negi & Magre, 2019). Law enforcement may be called in if the administration determines that it is necessary. Counseling sessions are set up on either side of the school if deemed necessary. When someone commits a crime like bullying, the punishment varies depending on their age and the severity of their crime, combined with possible repeated behaviors. It ranges from a short suspension to a recommendation for expulsion.
Violators of school or board policies or rules may face the following sanctions in addition to but not limited to: the involvement of parents; short-term isolation or time-out; behavior improvement agreements; one-on-one or small-group counseling sessions with a school counselor; a school suspension; detention before and after or on weekends; community service; suspension from extracurricular activities and bus privileges; an alternative school placement; and, finally, an out-of-school suspension or expulsion.
