The School of Athens is a fresco painting by the renaissance artist Raphael representing all the greatest philosophers, mathematicians, and scientists of classical antiquity assembled together and sharing ideas with one another. The work, which is widely regarded as the perfect embodiment of the renaissance classic spirit, exhibits several principles of design such as rhythm, proportion, balance, emphasis, and unity. Raphael applies the principle of rhythm to create a visual tempo in the fresco where certain figures appear closer than others thereby providing a distinctive sense of motion.
