Communicator Paper: Tim Cook and Communication Style
Tim Cook was born in 1960 in Alabama and pursued his bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering at Auburn University. He later completed his MBA from Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. Throughout his 12-year career at IBM, Cook served as an executive at Compaq and Intelligent Electronics prior to his placement at Apple in the year 1998 (Biography.com, 2018). During this period, Apple had not developed products such as iPhone, iPad, iPod or iMacs and its future seemed bleak with the decreasing profits. He nearly rejected the offer to accept the job at Apple as the future prospects of the company were not promising. He would later be named Apple’s CEO in August 2011 thus succeeding the late Steve Jobs.
Tim cook has always won my merit when it comes to communication. This has been greatly anchored on his style and method of delivery, his physical presentation, listening skills as well as content of his message. Let address these attributes as follows;
Cook employs various styles of delivering his messages. These include assertiveness in his style of communication. Tim has always been the man of self-esteem whenever he is communicating (Victor, 2012). He has great respect for his content and does not leave room for other people to intrude or carry him away from his point. For example, he uses constant eye contact. He also uses a passive aggressive style, and when he is angered he covers his anger in soft speech and has never wanted to engage anyone publicly. He always has a smiling face and a soft voice. He fears hurting others as a result of his anger.
As a leader, he employs various methods in communicating. These include verbal and written communication. Cook severally addresses his employees by use of word of mouth.
