Jake Barnes, a character in the novel "The Sun Also Rises," is American ex combat presently operating as a journalist in Paris as featured in the plot. The main element in the formation of the character begins before the actions in the novel commence. As a veteran, Jake is hurt, and even though he does not mention it directly, various instants in the novel reveal it. He endured an injury that deprives him of the capability to have sex. The narration of Jake is known by delicacy and implication. He gives hints instead of mentioning them out, exclusively when they target the war or wound. The physical environment around Jake influences the psychological formation of his character in the narrative.
