Introduction
Artists can express death through virtually every form of art, from painting to video, songs and even photographs, among many other formats. In most cases, the works are usually fiction that arises through the imagination of various issues in artists' minds. However, that does not mean that there are no arts that are incepted from real-life experience that artists go through. One of such arts is the painting created by Edvard Munch in 1893. The motif by munch represents an experience he had when his sister succumbed to Tuberculosis. The art does not only represent the death aspects. Still, it cuts across several other displays several other emotional feelings that human beings usually experience in losing a loved one.
Expressing Death in Death in Sickroom Paint
Edvard Munch's paint stands out on matters of death expression because it does not only portray death but sickness and sorrow as well. Secondly, the paint portrayals are a true expression of reality, considering that the artwork was a depiction of the artist's life experience when he lost his sister (Geisler, 2006). The positioning of the characters in the room, the expression on their faces culminated with the gestures they make, such as holding a chin, is a clear revelation of what a death scene usually looks like, especially when family members of the deceased are around. The family members' positioning in the room also depicts the individual moments that family members always need whenever they are mourning their loved ones. Though in the same room, each seems to be in their place as they are scattered across the room.
Besides just standing out as a true reflection of death scenes in a typical family set up, the motif also showcases several themes. The theme of denial in the artwork comes out through the characters' grieving faces included in the paint. The sad faces are a clear indication that the paint's characters are yet to come to terms with the passing of their loved one, with whom they shared close affection (Geisler, 2006). The grief in itself is a form of denial in that the mourners are yet to accept that their loved one is no more. On the other hand, anxiety can be depicted from the mourners' faces, who seem to have sunk in deep thoughts. ...
