LET AMERICA BE AMERICA AGAIN
What is Hughes message?
This was a period of the Great Depression, and the economy was doing worst, encompassed with all forms of ills and inequalities. Hughes addresses the Pioneers’ dream (The American Dream) of a free and equal America-a land of opportunity where any immigrant, natives (the reds), and all people of all races would make it in this newfound land. He is nostalgic of great America and pens his frustration of achieving that elusive dream as a total disillusion.

The poem is a masterpiece of art and a useful artifact that portrays the message to the intended audience. Langston’s use of varying literary devices shows his mastery in portraying the message. He employs repetition in the beginning stanzas to stress his message- (Let America, Let it be the dream … Let it be the pioneer…). The usage of alliteration and alternating rhymes in the first stanza shows his poetic skills in relaying the message and stressing the message home.
