What are the five needs, in order by level, of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs?
a) Physiological Needs – They are the most primary needs because they entail basic needs like food, clothing, and shelter. The need focuses on maintaining the body.
b) Safety Needs – It is the need to feel safe or secure from any form of harm. The safety need entails the need to be free from physical harm, to be financially secure. Generally, it is the need for assurance that no harm will come your way (Maslow, 1981).
c) Love/Belonging – It is the need to feel there is someone or people who love and care for you. To feel you belong to a certain group of people or person. Love, in this case, entails both sexual and non-sexual love. It can be described as more of a need-based on humans being social beings.
d) Self-Esteem – It is the need to feel self-respect or self-worth. The need drives a person to seek ways that will improve their confidence and improve their capacities as humans. It is a need driven by the need to be respected and recognized by others.
e) Self-Actualization – It is a desire for self-fulfillment driven by the need to become actualized to their potentials (Maslow, 1981). Generally, it can be described as a need to get the peace that comes with the knowledge that you are living up to your potentials.
What does Maslow mean when he states these needs form a “hierarchy of prepotency?” Does Maslow propose that level one needs always “trump” level two needs? If so, do you agree? If not, what does the idea of prepotency mean?
The ‘hierarchy of prepotency’ is an argument by Maslow that an individual satisfies lower level needs before moving to the high-level ones. The theory suggests that an individual, in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, will start satisfying the physiological needs, then the safety needs going through to finally the self-actualization needs. The lower needs are the most essential since they are on things an individual cannot live without. In this theory of ‘hierarchy of prepotency’, Maslow suggests that the level one needs trumps level two needs. By this, he means that physiological needs bridge a solution for safety needs. I agree with his argument because solving the physiological needs assures one’s safety (Maslow, 1981). Level two needs which are safety needs are targeted at a person feeling safe and secure. Solving physiological needs also solves these needs. For example, getting shelter assures for one’s safety. Getting food and investing towards a good healthcare plan e.g. insurance gives security for cases for health issues. From various aspects, I support Maslow’s argument. Some ...
