Film Reflection
I am a Civil War history enthusiast and I found Aftershock: Beyond the Civil War to be an important yet wonderful documentary. I appreciated that it went into great detail about a lot of issues that we usually skim over in school or during personal research. All I knew about this period from school was that there was a war and that two sides were in opposition, one side did this and the other did that, the United States won, the end. I had the impression that the Reconstruction delivered great change. As it turns out, it was also horrific.
I felt like Lincoln’s Reconstruction would be all about winning the hearts and minds of the Southerners. He intended to help the Southerners rebuild and get back on their feet again. I thought that it was foolish of the South to assassinate him. Somehow, the Reconstruction turned into a vicious punishment similar to how we treated Germany after World War One. Knowing how that panned out I feel like the South shot itself in the foot when it assassinated Lincoln.
The United States is a country based on freedom. Slavery goes against all that this wonderful country stands for. I find it incomprehensible that any country for that matter would practice slavery or be brutal to any of its citizens native or immigrants. I have come across people who try to make superfluous arguments that try to make it like it was not that wrong. I encountered a person who argued that only a quarter of the South owned slaves. To that I ask the rhetorical question of how many of them insisted Black people step aside on the sidewalk or path when a white person encountered them?
