Under what circumstances does gentrification lead to displacement, and why is it so controversial? What can be done to mitigate it?
Florida (2015) writes that gentrification displaced the citizens in urban areas in the early 1970s to the 1980s secondary to expensive rents, forced eviction, or that the residence was sold. Controversially, the trend gradually changed until the early 2000s, secondary to the inflation rate, while the other factors that lead to displacement include minority status, age, and discriminatory entry and exit. Since gentrification and displacement result from insufficient urbanism and diversity, the author suggests that inclusive localities are the solution to mitigate the increasing number of displaced citizens.
Hutson (2018) supported these statements and provided an elaboration by suggesting that the following factors impacted the displacement secondary to gentrification: insufficient housing, augmented global capital investment, divergence and diversity of the human resources, diminishing numbers of middle-class people in the competitive market cities, and advancements directed to environment sustainability.
