What is Ground Level Ozone (GLO)?
GLO is a prevalent pollutant impacting the environment and human health. GLO is created by nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) reaction in sunlight presence. Ozone is primarily considered a nuisance in cities because it travels great distances in collaboration with precursor emissions. There are elevated ozone levels in national parks. The primary sources of anthropogenic emissions of nitrogen oxides are power plants, cars, and industries. Industries, vegetation, and vehicles release VOCs (Schultz et al., 2017).
How is GLO Generated?
GLO, or tropospheric, is not directly released into the air. However, it forms through nitrogen and VOCs chemical reactions. Thus, this occurs when toxins that industries, cars, chemical plants, and other sources emit chemically react in sunlight presence. During sunny periods in urban settings, the ozone attains unhealthy levels, although the level is still high in colder months. Likewise, ozone can be transported by wind to long distances, and also rural settings can have high ozone levels (Schultz et al., 2017). GLO formation occurs two miles above the earth’s surface and affects the environment and humans. Though GLO concentration is less than stratospheric ozone, its influence on human health makes GLLO bad ozone. GLO is an aggravation that can adversely impact human health. In addition, weather assumes a massive function in GLO formation. GLO concentrations typically are highest on warm or hot days coupled with low humidity during the light wind. The EPA regulates GLO (O3). GLO is produced by pollution from factories, vehicles, and other sources (Schultz et al., 2017). Because of this, metropolitan areas typically have higher ground-level ozone concentrations than rural ones.
Health Effects of GLO
Ozone is identified to have several harmful effects on health, particularly for people who already have respiratory disorders like asthma. Initial exposure to ground-level ozone can have respiratory outcomes such as breathing difficulties, worsening lung illness, and more recurrent asthma attacks. Ozone exposure is also linked to worsened allergies, early death, and damage to the neurological system and reproductive organs. Long-term ozone exposure has been associated in studies to lower birth weight, lowered lung operation, and an amplified chance of asthma development in infants, raising the risk for early mortality. GLO causes injury and inflammation to the lining of the lungs. The damaged cells are replaced and shed after a few days, like skin peels after a sunburn (Zhang et al., 2019). According to animal studies, lung tissue may become permanently damaged if this inflammation occurs regularly over an extended period (months, years, or a lifetime), leading to a permanent loss of lung operation and a lower life quality (Zhang et al., 2019).
