Gastrulation is characterized by morphogenetic movements resulting in the 3 primary germ layers- ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. The ectoderm is the outer embryo layer the endoderm is the inner embryo layer, while the mesoderm lies in between. The amphibian and fish mammal models are appropriate to explain gastrulation as they identify the stages that characterize cell reorganization in the formation of the three germ layers.
Gastrulation in the amphibian model is different because of the high yolk concentration within eggs, with the yolk filled cells important sources of energy for the embryos. The cells appear to fold inwards and this initiates the gastrulation process with the formation of the dorsal lip as part of the blastopore (Gilbert, 2000).
