In determining “what should I eat,” there is a focus on healthy meal planning, where exercising and proper dieting significantly improve health. Plant breeding and biotechnology involve the genetic modification and introduction of genes with desirable hybrid (Pfeiffer, 2003). In evaluating the food habits, there is a focus on the environmental outcomes or sustainability, health/nutrition, and economic impacts of food choice and the food system.
Sustainable agricultural practices are resource-conserving, environmentally safe in an economically viable food production system. Food movements mainly address local food production issues, but the commercial food industry influences food production (Levkoe, 2011). Unsustainable practices in the food system affect the environment, human health, and quality of foods.
Organic crops have lower nitrate levels and unhealthy components than conventional crops. There has been growing popularity of organic foods that are associated with reducing pesticide exposure, healthy eating options, and sustainability efforts. There are differences between organic crops and conventional crops, but it is unclear how mineral concentration affects nutrition and health (Baranski et al., 2014). Fresh food is healthier than processed foods, but processed foods are cheaper.
Commercially available food tends to be highly refined and processed, but the food industry is powerful and has influenced policies. There has been increased politicization of the food process, partly to limit the influence of those raising concerns on bad eating habits (Nestle, 2007). Healthy eating choices are associated with better health outcomes, while highly processed foods are calorie-dense.
There is the knowledge that fast foods are linked to obesity rather than healthier food options, but I choose the foods at times. It is challenging to maintain long-term weight loss, especially when there is poor dieting and a lack of exercise (Kolata, 2016). Still, obesity prevention is essential to improve overall health and reduce the risk of lifestyle diseases.
