History of the US Legal System
The US has one of the most developed and effective legal systems globally and which has been instrumental in ensuring that peace and order is maintained in the country for centuries. Through working with law enforcement officers and agencies, the US legal system has ensured that criminals have been put off the streets and into correctional facilities where they are reformed to become responsible members in society. That as it may, it is vital to examine some of the historical events and circumstances that led to the development of the US legal system. Most notably, America gained its independence from British rule and oppression. Attainment of independence meant that Americans were free to govern their own affairs. However, having being under British rule for so long, Americans were highly confused on what to do with their newly acquired freedom. The Articles of Confederation that had been place since the issuance of the declaration of independence in 1776 had established several confederate states that operated like independent countries and which was chaotic to say the least (Hall, 2004). As such, the US Constitution that was eventually signed in 1787 led to the establishment of the national government, essential laws and the US Bill of Rights that guaranteed various freedoms and rights to American citizens. Article III of the constitution required the establishment of a Supreme Court. It also called upon the Congress create lower federal courts where necessary (Hall, 2004). In that regard, the new Congress through the Judiciary Act of 1789 oversaw the birth of the US court system.
Influence of the Christian Faith on establishment of Laws in the US
The Christian faith has since time immemorial been guiding individuals to lead righteous and ethical lives. God through the bible and anointed men and women has assisted people to differentiate between right and wrong and consequently, ensure peace not only with themselves but also those around them. Particularly, the Ten Commandments provide a set of rules that all Christians strive to abide by and in so doing, live in accordance with God’s teachings (Aroney, 2020). These Christian ideals have for years been instrumental in guiding the enactment of laws in the US. Law makers have been keen to ensure that they enact laws that protect the freedoms and rights of all American citizens.
