POV on Violent Crimes: Blowing It Out of Proportion vs. Minimizing It

Essay Instructions:

Choose a statistic of your choice (for example, murder or robbery for a particular year, 10-year trends, etc – make sure the statistic you choose is on the incidence of a criminal event – not on incarceration, processing of inmates, public attitudes, etc). Now, pretend you are a columnist for the News and Observer. Write a one-page article from one of these points of view:
· Make the statistic sound worse than it really is – can you blow it out of proportion? Don’t falsify the numbers, but present the information in such a way as to make it sound like there is a huge problem going on.
· Make the statistic seem less important – make the crime seem like less of a problem. Again, don’t falsify the numbers, but minimize the problem.
A suggestion would be to compare statistics – either contrast the rates of two different crimes, or perhaps contrast the rates of crime in two cities. If you have chosen a particular crime, check out clearance rates for that crime on the SBI’s website (you’ll find clearance rates under each of the years listed).
You can use any or all of the links under "Bookmarks" or in the lecture notes to complete the assignment, or find another crime statistics site not mentioned here – just make sure you cite your references.

The safety of residents and foreigners in the country is thus put into question since the FBI (2019) statistics further indicate that an estimated 366.7 violent crimes occurred per every 100,000 persons in the United States. With such a rate, one would wonder if law enforcement is carrying out their tasks as required. Moreover, it is questionable whether the government is doing enough at the national, regional, and local levels to deal with violent crime.
For the avoidance of doubt, violent crime includes violations like homicide, assault, robbery, sexual assault, criminal harassment, kidnapping, extortion, and uttering threats. It is only after considering the gravity of such actions that one can appreciate the fact that having a high rate of as many violent crime statistics as aforementioned is a cause for worry. Nothing tears the moral fabric apart like violent crime. The pain and suffering people have to undergo, the number of families that are left with unimaginable torture, and the pointless loss of property are there to show how bad our society has become.
It is quite telling to note that other industrialized nations, as you would categorize the United States, have far much ...
