Accidents do occur, disaster often strikes at the most unexpected of times. All that individuals and agencies need to do is to simply try as much as possible to prepare in advance for such occurrences. There always exist some operative parameters when it comes to issues to deal with disaster preparedness, and specifically incidences of mass fatalities. When it comes to official communication in a situation of mass fatality, the responsibility usually falls upon either the coroner or the chief medical examiner (Gershon et.al. 2014). It is one of these two authorities who will relay any information related to the incident at hand.
The Joint Information Center is basically a facility that is usually setup upon the occurrence of an incident, for the purpose of relaying information or any kin d of communication relating to the incident (Finn, 2018). The information is therefore responsible for ensuring that the kind of information being relayed from the incident is according to the desired content and quality. It should avoid disclosing any kind of information that is extremely sensitive or too graphic for the public and the close family members of the victims. It therefore forms the hub of information for all the media and interested parties and acts to coordinate this too.
Within the JIC are vital positions that individuals are delegated, so as to ensure smooth operations and execution of duties. Perhaps the most important positions in the JIC is the Public Information Officer (PIO) and the JIC Manager. Just as the title, the roles of the JIC Manager is to oversee all the operations of the JIC.
