The first ten amendments to the Constitution or the Bill of Rights guarantee the freedoms and rights of American citizens and limit the powers of the state.
The First Amendment gives Americans the right to freedom of expression, assembly and the press and American citizens can express their opinion without fearing reprisals from the government.
