The First Great Awakening in the 1730s and 1740s in Britain and North American colonies was a period of Protestantism revival where the people focused on religious devotion. The Second Great Awakening also added a religious underpinning to the ideas of self-reliance, self-improvement, and self-determination (Foner, 2014). The Great Awakening occurred at a time when there was an emphasis on salvation and religious revival in place of commercial society. Revivalists were against levying taxes to support the colonial churches, and the movement influenced economic liberty and a capitalist ethic that still influences America's economic system. Officials in New England favored the state-supported churches were favored in New England, while the dissenters wanted religious freedom and supported private property ownership.
Revivalists also encouraged them to trust their views and those of the elites while also emphasizing independent judgment. They also condemned wealthy planters who appeared to focus on the world and not salvation. Emphasis on independent thoughts still influences American politics and the economic system with the common person's mass revival. The new churches that merged rallied against the established churches and promoted religious freedom. Thus, there were revolutionary tendencies to change the system that benefited the elites and the establishment.
