Legal standards are those guidelines set in government laws to ensure that the goods or services provided meet the expected quality standards. On the contrary, ethical standards are based on the human principles of right and wrong. Any action that a government takes has to balance between the two standards. It has to be legal and at the same time not violate people’s rights. The balance between the two concepts became more apparent during the current COVID-19 pandemic, where states had to take radical measures to curb its spread. Among the notable measures included declaration of essential and nonessential businesses to ensure that only those goods and services that were necessary to maintain safety, sanitation and operation of the society were allowed. Combined with shut downs, these actions resulted in some legal and ethical concerns among the people.
